What to expect on the first visit:
If a patient’s appointment is for initial evaluation, a complete history and physical is performed by our medical team (Dr. Voesack, Jennifer Pickett Certified Nurse Practitioner, or Kevin Huffman Certified Physician Assistant). Necessary studies (MRI and/or x-rays) are ordered and completed. Then, a treatment plan is designed. The initial treatment plan is designed to start with conservative care including activity modification, medication, physical therapy and/or spinal injections.
If a patient’s appointment is for a surgical consult, a complete history and physical is performed by our medical team (Dr. Voesack, Jennifer Pickett Certified Nurse Practitioner, or Kevin Huffman Certified Physician Assistant), previous studies and conservative care plans are reviewed, then a surgical evaluation is completed by Dr. Ramsey. Surgical consultation is considered when a patient has severe pain and failed conservative care, or a patient has significant weakness or numbness.
If a patient is being evaluated for the 3 day process, the patient will need to contact our office in order to fax or email their MRI or CT scan report for evaluation as a possible candidate. A patient advocate from our office will contact you regarding possible surgery. You will need to be off all blood thinners (Aspirin, Plavix, Coumadin, Advil, or NSAIDs) and have a medical clearance from your medical doctor prior to arrival. Upon arrival, you will receive a surgical consultation.
Before Your Appointment
We look forward to serving you as you begin your health care with us. Your Health Team would like to save you some time on your initial visit to our center. Please download, print and fill out your completed New Patient Information forms and bring the information requested with you to your appointment.
Your Initial Visit
During your initial visit you will be seen by our staff who will ask you about your medical history and your symptoms. A focused neurological examination will then be made by your doctor.
While many patients want to discuss in great detail the exact event which may have caused their injury, the most important information your health care team needs involves your symptoms (such as where you have pain, weakness, numbness, etc.) and what limitations these symptoms place on your every day activities. Please take the time to write down this information.
After reviewing your medical history and diagnostic tests, you will be presented with a number of treatment options. We will inform you of the risks and benefits of each option and will assist you in making the final decision concerning which option is best for you.
Please bring the following to your appointment:
- Completed new patient information forms
- Insurance Card
- Drivers License
- Any and all films pertaining to your injury (example MRI, CT scan X-Ray etc.)
- Medical records/reports pertaining to your injury
- Referrals if required by your insurance plan
- Minor patients (under 18 yrs of age) must be accompanied by a parent/guardian at every visit.
Emergencies
If you have an emergency after normal office hours, you will be directed to go to the nearest hospital emergency room where you will be evaluated by the emergency room physician. They will be in direct contact with your doctor or the on-call doctor from our office. |
